For more than fifteen years, one resident’s experience of almshouse living has been about far more than having a roof over her head. It is a story of finding security, friendship, independence and, above all, a true sense of belonging — a place where everyone has a place to belong.
Daphne’s story …
When I first moved into the almshouses in 2011, I was looking for somewhere to live. What I found was so much more than a home – I found a community.
Living here has changed my life for the better in so many ways. From the very beginning, my family felt reassured knowing that I was living somewhere safe and supportive, with help available if I ever needed it. That peace of mind has meant as much to them as it has to me.
One of the greatest gifts of living here has been the friendships I’ve made. My neighbours are more than just the people next door – they are friends. We look out for one another, share a chat, lend a helping hand, and celebrate life’s moments together. There is a real sense of community that makes every day a little brighter.
Being in the heart of Bury St Edmunds is another wonderful benefit. Everything I need is within easy reach – the shops, cafés, beautiful parks, churches, and local services are all just a short walk away. It means I can stay active, independent, and connected to the town that I love.
After more than fifteen years, I can honestly say that moving into the almshouses was one of the best decisions I ever made. It has given me security, friendship, independence, and a true sense of belonging. I am proud to call this place my home.
